MPs take chance for final COVID grilling

The health select committee will reconvene today for its last act of the parliamentary session, as Opposition parties try to find flaws in the Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Committee chair Louisa Wall says it has invited Health Minister Chris Hipkins and the Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, to answer questions.
The letter seeking the hearing came from National’s health spokesperson, Dr Shane Reti, and was supported by a majority of members, with New Zealand First having the casting vote.
"As chair of the committee I have the authority to call meetings and I did based on the fact a majority of my colleagues wanted to have that briefing and it was really to add another layer of scrutiny, in addition to the 1 pm meetings that we’ve all become accustomed to," Ms Wall says.
The hearing will be streamed on the select committee’s Facebook page.
