Moeahu challenges Maori seat delay
A Taranaki kaumatua has challenged Taranaki regional councillors for putting off considering a Māori seat for at least three years.
Peter Moeahu used yesterday’s policy and planning committee meeting to raise the issue whenever the agenda items included a reference to Māori or iwi consultation.
He said officers should just dump the iwi consultation paragraph since they didn’t consider it anyway.
Acting chief executive Mike Nield said iwi and Māori are always included when applicable.
The council last month voted against establishing a Māori seat because a majority of councillors said there was not enough time for iwi to make their case on whether they supported the idea or not.
