Ōtiria braces mud to bring home silverware
There have been celebrations in Ōtiria as its club brought home the Bay of Islands rugby shield for the first time in 59 years, beating Taiamai Ōhaeawai 31-26 away.
.Civil Defence Minister Peeni Henare says he visited the clubrooms after last month’s floods they were covered in mud and silt, so it’s great to see his first club coming through so strongly.
There was even a parade down the main street of Ōtiria.
"It was basically one truck or I think it may have been a tractor and a trailer and it was supported by the local police and there was a lot of social distancing. You can imagine the township of Ōtiria isn't that big but it looked really impressive to see whānau standing out on their kerbsides, waving blue and white flags and signs, celebrating the team as they went down the street," Mr Henare says.
