Iwi and Rotorua Council seek wastewater alternative
CNI Iwi Holdings has offered temporary use of land within Whakarewarewa Forest for the discharge of treated wastewater.
The area of the forest used for the discharge will be reduced from 400 hectares to less then 40 hectares.
The company is working on a long term solution with Rotorua Lakes Council and Te Arawa Lakes Trust, which has opposed renewal of consents because the wastewater ends up in Lake Rotorua.
On Friday the parties submitted a joint memorandum to the Environment Court outlining the new agreement, which includes upgrading the council’s wastewater treatment plant and finding a culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable way of discharging treated water.
