Boardwalk protects Maungawhau’s ancient features
Auckland’s Tūpuna Maunga Authority has opened a visitor boardwalk around the crater and tihi of Maungawhau / Mt Eden.
Chair Paul Majurey says it provides long-overdue protection for the historic features that are the last remnants of the pā which was built there around 1200AD.
The boardwalk winds through the terraces where houses and gardens once sat, and the rua or pits which were roofed for storing crops.
He says the previous track had not been able to cope with the 1.2 million visitors a year, with aggregate washing into rua, uneven surfaces, and alternate tracks scarring the terraces.
