Auckland Council pressing ahead with Waikato River seal
The Waikato River Authority has welcomed progress towards an agreement which would allow access for Auckland to draw additional water from the awa.
Last week Auckland Council gave approval for the mayor to finalise a deal with the authority, Watercare, Waikato Regional Council, and Waikato-Tainui.
As part of its commitment to the health and wellbeing of the river, Auckland Council and Watercare will establish a river restoration trust including iwi and the authority.
Authority co-chairs Roger Pikia and Paula Southgate say their priority has always been river first.
Mr Pikia says the Authority has made significant progress through ten years of funding restoration projects in the river catchment, and it looks forward to working with Watercare on more projects.
