South Taranaki mining plan headed for Supreme Court

Trans-Tasman Resources has secured a three-day hearing in November for the Supreme Court to hear its appeal against a Court of Appeal judgment that blocked its plans to mine the seabed off south Taranaki.
The consent was opposed by iwi, conservation groups and fishing companies who fear the experimental technology will devastate the environment.
Company chair Alan Eggers says international demand for iron ore is surging, and the venture is a chance to develop a billion-dollar export industry which would have a minimal impact on the environment while helping meet the demand for iron and the strategic metals vanadium and titanium required as the world and New Zealand transition to a low carbon energy economy.
