The chair of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Hine says a hui at the weekend to fill the hapū’s seat on Te Rūnanga ā Iwi ō Ngapuhi was invalid.

Te Waihoroi Shortland says Ngāti Hine has spent more than 10 years fighting to split from the rūnanga, including opposing any mandate to negotiate a single settlement of northern claims.

The election flew in the face of a meeting on Friday where Ngāpuhi acting chief executive Sam Napia and board representatives which agreed to work with Ngāti Hine on a new partnership to share treaty settlement fisheries assets.

"We have a letter from the acting CEO of Ngāpuhi informing us that the board were withdrawing any action that would see the election to their board from te takiwa ō Ngāti Hine so I am fully expectant that when this group turns up to present their credentials they will be turned away," Mr Shortland says. The Ngāpuhi Rūnanga and Ngāti Hine hold markedly different views about how many Ngāpuhi affiliates to Ngāti Hine, therefore, how big its share of the fisheries assets should be.
