Iwi applauds abbatoir ammonia spill charge

Ngāti Ruanui has welcomed Taranaki Regional Council’s charging Silver Fern Farms for an ammonia leak in February that created the largest fish kill in the region’s history.
Rūnanga chief executive Debbie Ngarewa Packer says water used to minimise the impact of the gas leaking from the beef processing plant at Hāwera was discharged to the Tawhiti Stream, killing thousands of tuna along its 13 kilometre course.
Iwi members have spent decades restoring tuna populations in the awa, as they are seen as as kaitiaki and a barometer of the iwi’s health as a people.
