Tauira drop out to mind families through pandemic

A South Auckland school principal says COVID-19 lockdowns are leading to some pupils in low decile kura quitting to support their families.
Hayley Milne from Kia Aroha College in Otara says in some cases the school has encouraged students who have completed basic NCEA requirements to drop out.
"This virus has annihilated indigenous and communities of colour right across the globe. We are just saying our young people's health and the whakapapa of our whānau are way more important than some NCEA credits," she says.
Hayley Milne says Kia Aroha has purchased laptops for their student to use during the lockdown and actively monitors their progress.
