Children’s Commissioner seeks Maori deputy

The New Zealand Maori Council is welcoming a decision by the Commissioner for Children to take on a Maori assistant commissioner.
Applications for the one-year role close next Tuesday, and Commissioner Andrew Becroft says he intends it to be a genuine partnership.
Council executive director Matthew Tukaki says the council has pushed for the role for the past two years.
"There's never been a Māori commissioner for children in terms of a direct role. It will complement the role Judge Becroft is doing. It will also provide some support when it comes to treaty issues when it comes to navigating what has become a very complex world of Oranga Tamariki," he says.
