Te Whanau a Apanui mussels up

Te Whānau-ā-Apanui is joining forces with Aotearoa Mussel Limited to build a land-based mussel spat hatchery in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
Te Rūnanga o Te Whānau chief executive Rikirangi Gage says the iwi will also invest $1.2 million in a research and development programme with support from Callaghan Innovation.
Almost all the spat in New Zealand is natural catch from Golden Bay and Kaitaia.
Mr Gage says a predictable and well-managed supply chain of spat will be vital for the expected huge expansion in mussel farming being promoted by government.
Hatchery breeding provides that certainty and allows selective breeding of mussels which mature faster and have better resilience to changing global conditions.
