PGF a remedy for unequal growth
Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones says something like the Provincial Growth Fund will be needed even if New Zealand First is not part of the next Government.
Over the past three years the fund has handed out almost $3 billion for projects, including hundreds of millions to projects bringing together iwi and local bodies and businesses.
Mr Jones says no one can doubt the passion, thoroughness and vigour he has brought to his role as the fund's steward.
"It's not an ethnic thing, it's not a Pākehā, Māori, Asian thing – sadly in New Zealand, as our economy has followed a certain trajectory of growth, we've left too many people behind and the Provincial Growth Fund has been a remedy to ensure that the provinces have good infrastructure, good training, but most importantly, thriving enterprises," he says.
