Tairāwhiti summit alarms Tamihere

Māori Party co-leader John Tamihere says Māori can’t allow unemployment and economic dependency to become normalised.
Mr Tamihere attended last week’s Rau Tipu Rau Ora Tairāwhiti economic summit.
He says in some parts of the East Coast 70 percent of Māori are out of work.
"It has not moved for 25 years, they then start to normalise welfarism. We cannot numb ourselves down to accept this is all we are worth in our own country. A number of us have become quite colonised to this and numb to it, and this is not right," Mr Tamihere says.
The next of eight Rau Tipu Rau Ora summits is in Waikato on August 14.
