Reti rules out Maori health authority

National’s new health spokesperson isn’t keen on a Māori health authority.
Shane Reti says the authority as proposed in the Simpson report on health and disability services would have no funding and would only be advisory, so it would have no clout.
He was also concerned it would undermine whānau ora by taking its health arm, reducing the holistic purpose behind that kaupapa.
"I can achieve the same by requiring an annual Māori health strategy right at every DHB board table. That is how I would approach this," Dr Reti says.
