Wastewater dump plans angers Hokianga whānau

Hokianga residents are challenging an application to dump wastewater into the awa.
Hokianga Harbour Foreshore Committee has delivered a 1200-signature petition to Northland Regional Council asking that it publicly notify the resource consent application from the Far North District Council for the Ōmāpere-Opononi Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Spokesperson Cheryl Turner says community opposition resulted in the Environment Court rejecting a similar consent application in 2010.
She says the council's cultural assessments ignore the rich history of the area.
"He awa tino tapu tēnei. The first man that came here was Kupe. To try to get that kōrero not just to the regional council but the Far North District Council, they try their best to ignore all our cultural things. they try their best to ignore the community things," Ms Turner says.
