Warning labels good for pēpi
Māori public health advocate Hāpai te Hauora is welcoming the decision of the Food Standards Authority for Australia and New Zealand to make pregnancy warning labels compulsory on all alcohol products within the next three years.
Spokesperson Jessikha Leatham says warning labels are a first line of defence for vulnerable communities which are being targeted by alcohol marketing.
She says drinking during pregnancy can lead to the pēpi having Foetal Alcohol Spectrum disorder, which can manifest in physical and developmental problems, and learning and behavioural difficulties.
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is also a risk factor for sudden unexpected death in infancy.
