Kaupapa Maori seen as agribusiness future
Adoption of kaupapa Māori principles may help reshape New Zealand agribusiness to survive in the post-COVID landscape.
That’s the word from Traci Houpapa, the chair of the Federation of Māori Authorities.
She says Māori authorities stated the year in a strong position, with exports growing 7 per cent to $741 million during 2019.
While there is huge uncertainty over what will happen over the next two or three years as the world gets through the pandemic, she expects a growing focus on the environment and sustainable agribusiness.
“Māori business has been talking about this for 50 to 80 years and so what we are really starting to see in New Zealand agribusiness turning to kaupapa Māori principles and Māori agribusinesses like Ngāi Tukairangi Trust for horticulture, Miraka for dairy, and others really starting to come to the fore. The focus on te taio is really going to put kaupapa Māori principles to the fore,” Ms Houpapa says.
