Hīkoi call to roll Oranga Tamariki head
One of the heads of the Māori inquiry into Oranga Tamariki says Māori may have to hikoi to demand the departure of the head of the child protection agency.
Dame Kahurangi Naida Glavish says a Newsroom report on Oranga Tamariki’s culture under Grainne Moss confirms what many senior Māori suspected about the new organisation.
Current and former employees complaining about bullying, a lack of social work experience in the senior management team including Moss, social workers being targeted if they complained, and only paying lip service to Te Ao Māori.
Dame Naida says despite promises of reform, nothing is changing for the better.
"They’re not only not listening to us. They're not listening to the Children's Commissioner, they're not listening to the Ombudsman, they're not listening to anybody. Perhaps we should march before the election and remind those people in there that they're there because of votes and confidence. We have no confidence, absolutely," she says.
Daime Naida says Children’s Minister Tracey Martin seems to be protecting Grainne Moss but failed to protect tamariki Māori.
