Wealthy get chance to fix welfare safety net
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says her party's guaranteed minimum income policy will ensure everyone can live with dignity.
The party opened its election campaign with a promise it will push a future government partner to guarantee all those not in full time work an income of $325 a week after tax, with more for those who are sick or disabled and those with children.
She says it can be paid by a tax on wealth and the wealthy.
"Wealth has not been taxed in this country and it has meant many, many people are struggling to get by and a few people have more than they will ever, ever need. And COVID-19 showed us and shone light on the cracks in our safety net. People realised how important it is to have a strong safety net and we have got the opportunity now to fix this and I am really proud," Ms Davidson says.
As part of the reform the Greens would replace Accident Compensation with a system that supported all people affected by accident, illness or disability.
