Parihaka prepares for curious and committed
The chair of the Parihaka Papakainga Trust says a new visitors centre and other infrastructure will help the village deal with the influx of visitors who want to find out more about its pacifist past.
The centre will be built with a $14 million grant from the Provincial Growth Fund.
Tina Mason says it will help Parihaka tell its story the Parihaka way, as well as deal with a constant stream of visitors who find their way to the village on the western slopes of Mount Taranaki.
"We get busses that come through, We get camper vans coming through, they expect to see something when they arrive. They continually ask our residents if somebody could take them on a tour around Parihaka so this is instrumental in kind of managing who comes through our gate as well," she says.
There is no sign pointing to Parihaka because the council was fed up with its signs being stolen.
