Ngāti Whātua lawyer added to abuse commission
Lawyer Julia Steenson from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has been appointed to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-Based Institutions.
She fills the vacancy created when Judge Coral Shaw who took over as chair.
Internal Affairs Minister Tracey Martin says Ms Steenson has extensive governance, legal and Te Ao Māori experience which are valuable for the role.
She is currently a director of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa Limited and an elected representative on the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust.
The Royal Commission will restart its hearings in September.
