Wall keen on regenerated list career
She will be back on the list, but not just any list.
Louisa Wall emerged from Labour’s selection process having given up her safe Manurewa seat to newcomer Arena Williams, but with her position at number 29 guaranteeing her return to parliament in September.
She admits disappointment at no longer representing the south Auckland seat, but says the compromise agreed was a return to her roots.
"We have regional lists but I actually chose to stand on the kaunihera Māori list because I’m proud to be tangata whenua and also my passion around our indigenous rights and I guess within the context of Black Lives Matter and the whole focus on the remnants of colonisation, it was a good time for me to step aside in some ways to allow regeneration and to focus on some different kaupapa,” she says.
As well as continuing her advocacy for women’s and LGBTI equality, her new position will give her a firm footing to advocate for Māori.
