Waiariki MP Tamati Coffey is welcoming funding for an innovative pre-employment training scheme for rangatahi.
The $400,000 from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's He Poutama Rangatahi fund will allow the Bay of Plenty Youth Development Trust’s Moemoea, Kimihia, Taea to take on another 60 trainees over the next two years.
The scheme targets 15 to 24 year olds not currently in employment, education or training who are at risk of long-term benefit dependency.
Based around the Tauranga Boxing Academy and its charismatic head coach, former Warriors winger Henry Fa'afili, the programme combines a whanau-centred approach to pastoral care with effective use of training and job placements.
"It's just another example of lifting up our young people, giving them the skills, giving them the confidence, wrapping around that support to make sure they actually do something with their lives and they are inspired to do something," Mr Coffey says.
