New housing better fit for Māori needs
Tāmaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says the state housing being built today is more in line with the needs of modern Māori whānau.
Mr Henare attended the opening this week of a 71-unit Kainga Ora apartment development in Onehunga, which replaced 34 terraced houses.
He says surveys of Māori social housing preferences show the need is for either one or two bedroom units or four bedroom dwellings, rather than the old three bedroom Māori Affairs or state house.
"I was really impressed by the facilities. There's whānau room. There's access to public transport, access to the shopping centre etc. I think it's a fantastic kaupapa and the Minister for Housing, Dr Megan Woods, said it – we're not just building homes, we're building communities and I think that particular example in Onehunga is a fantastic one," Mr Henare says.
