Challenge laid to Māori broadcast sector

Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta expects new proposals for Māori television and radio will rub the sector up the wrong way, but it’s designed to start a conversation.
The Māori Media Sector Shift Options paper is the result of two year’s work by officials trying to come to grips with falling audience numbers for Māori.
Television and the wide adoption of digital platforms for viewing content.
Ms Mahuta says the sector needs to think about how it can remain relevant.
While there have been calls to put more money into the sector, which has not had a baseline funding increase for more than a decade, Minister Mahuta questions whether it is the best use for the money to have the sector stay in the same place.
