As the country heads towards Level 1 of COVID-19 alertness, candidates for September’s general election are contemplating a return to kanohi ki te kanohi campaigning.
Shanan Halbert, who is making a third attempt to wrest Northcote for Labour from National’s Dan Bidois, is opening a campaign office in Birkenhead this evening.
He says while the opposition is out doorknocking already, Labour is waiting for Level 1.
"I look forward to door knocking. I'm a great door knocker and I enjoy having those conversations but you've got to read the mood of your electorate too and ensure they're ready for you to come knocking at their door," he says.
Mr Halbert says having knocked National’s majority in the seat from Jonathan Coleman’s 6000 in the 2017 general election to 1300 in the by-election, he sees Northcote as winnable for Labour in September.
