National urged to purge for renewal
Time for a real clean out in National’s ranks.
That’s the verdict from political commentator Shane Phillips as new leader Todd Muller pulls together his team.
He says the best feature of the coup is it could spell the end of ousted deputy leader Paula Bennett’s career and with it the divisive approach she brought to politics, whether in Opposition or in Government where she was Minister for Social Development.
"The National Party needs a fresh face and having people who've been there, done that and failed moving to the back bench really isn't good enough. They need a clean out like Labour did before the last election. Opposition is the right time to do that so people like Paula Bennett, Anne Tolley, Gerry Brownlee, it really is a time for a clean out so the new net can go fishing," Mr Phillips says.
