Manuhiri fears water pollution from Dome landfill
The chair of Mahurangi iwi Ngāti Manuhiri is questioning Auckland Council’s support of a giant landfill near Warkworth.
Waste Management has applied for a plan change and resource consents for the tip on farmland at Dome Valley.
Mook Hohneck says there is just 10 kilometres between the Kaipara Harbour and Pākiri, and the tip falls in the middle.
He says at a time of climate change it would be extremely short sighted of the council to allow it to go ahead.
"We’re short of water and the only three prospective sites they are looking at for new water sources are south of the Manukau, and yet the population is moving up into Ngāti Manuhiri, into Mahurangi and Kaipara and we have the biggest source of natural water and freshwater lake, yet the council is only building rubbish tips in our area," Mr Hohneck says.
The Hoteo River, which the landfill could leach into, is the largest in the Auckland region and accounts for 8 percent of regional drainage.
