Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says the National Party may have a new leader, but it’s still National.
Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller ousted Simon Bridges on Friday in a well-executed coup as the party slumped to 29 percent in the polls and faced losing 17 or more MPs at the September election.
Ms Davidson says the Greens and National have different visions for the country, especially when it comes to Māori kaupapa.
"He’ll have to prove whether or not he is going to be willing to work, listen and genuinely show up for Māori aspirations. I didn't see championing things like the iwi checkpoints to keep our kaumātua and our pakeke safe in our Māori communities. That is an example of, let's see where his advocacy falls. He is going to have to prove that," she says.
Ms Davidson says she’s honoured Green members have put her on top of the list, and says Chloe Swarbrick’s elevation to the number 3 spot is a tribute to her communication skills and the hard work she has put in to her first term.
The next Māori on the list is Tīwhanawhana Trust chair Elizabeth Kerekere at number 9, so the party would need to improve on its 2017 result for her to enter parliament.
