Hauraki Gulf Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki kaitiaki and Department of Conservation rangers are scrambling to trap a stoat on Motutapu Island before it lays waste to native birds and lizards.
A DOC ranger spotted stoat footprints this week while servicing a biosecurity sentry station at Administration Bay on the Hauraki Gulf island’s north-west coast.
A network of traps baited with eggs and rabbit meat set to catch the mustelid.
Motutapu has been pest free since 2011 and provides a safe haven for threatened and at-risk native wildlife including kiwi, takahē, tūturuatu / shore plover, tīeke / saddleback, kākāriki / red-crowned parakeet, korimako/bellbird, and shore skink.
