A Ngāti Whātua leader says Waikato Tainui’s call for Auckland to back off increasing its take from the Waikato River is a challenge for the super city to take a fresh look at its water needs.
Tame Te Rangi says he supports the iwi’s desire to protect the mauri of its awa.
He says the continuing drought is causing major problems for Tāmaki Makaurau, with dams in the Waitakere and Hunua ranges running low.
Aucklanders have taken water for granted for too long, and the time is right for new thinking.
"We've heard the 2020 Budget. We have noted with interest the green infrastructure that's there. We think it's time now to start getting some alignment between the assessment of allocation or over-allocation of water, followed closely with investment in remediation, restoration-type programmes," Mr Te Rangi says.
