Proud moment as kohanga putea boosted
There’s $200 million for Kōhanga Reo in the Budget, and that has one kōhanga kid excited.
Minister Peeni Henare says the money will allow the movement to bring the pay of kaiako up the levels enjoyed elsewhere in the early childhood sector, and to upgrade facilities.
It has been a long time coming, after years of arguing how to address issues raised in the movement’s Waitangi Tribunal claim.
“As a tamaiti of kohanga reo and as a mokopuna of my grandfather who with our kaumatua and kuia started this kaupapa, yesterday was one of those tangi moments where I was really proud. I’ve spoken to a few of our kohanga reo in Tamaki Makaurau. They’re really happy but we’ve got to continue to make sure the relationship between kōhanga and this government is a strong one,” Mr Henare says.
