The Prime Minister says being able to bring back Maori trades training was one of the highlights of Budget 2020.
The Budget focus on getting the economy back on its feet after the shock of COVID-19 means jobs got priority through a $1.6 billion trades and apprenticeship training package.
He Poutama Rangatahi, which was piloted in provincial areas as a way to reach young Maori at high risk of being unemployed, was also ramped up and will be run in the major cities.
Jacinda Ardern says trade training was a major part of how New Zealand was built.
"So for me, this is a chance to actually reinstate something that decades ago was such a huge part of our communities and our society and bring it back stronger and better than it was," she says.
Entry barriers have been lowered by making training free in areas that will be critical to the recovery.
