The head of South Island whānau ora commissioning agency Te Pūtahitanga hopes today’s Budget will acknowledge the impact providers have had during the lockdown and how they can help the recovery.
Helen Leahy says the past seven weeks has taken a huge toll on marae, navigators, hapū and whānau entities as they have responded to whānau in crisis.
With many people having lost their jobs or being fearful of their prospects, whānau ora navigators are also in a position now to help people back into employment.
"It’s not just about brushing up a cv. If you've lost a job and you have to pick yourself back up again, care for your family, and put yourself forward in the best light, you do need somebody walking alongside you to say 'you can do it, these skills are transferable, they can be applied in a different type of job but we can do this, believe in ourselves,'" Ms Leahy says.
Many whānau have come out of lockdown with lower income and crippling power bills.
