The Government is accused of not trusting Māori to look after themselves.
Ngāti Whātua chair Dame Rangimarie Naida Glavish says the Government failed to consult on the proposal to put a limit on the number of people who could attend a tangi at any one time.
After an uproar at the original 10-person limit, it was raised yesterday to 50.
She says it’s not the way to treat a treaty partner.
"We care very much for our whakapapa so we are not going to slip back in any risk at all in the controllability of our tangihanga. they have no confidence and no trust whatsoever in our ability to look after ourselves while they themselves can't look after us other than to create a police state," Dame Naida says.
