Co-chairs raise treaty role in Hauraki Gulf Forum
The Hauraki Gulf Forum has adopted a co-governance leadership model, with tangata whenua members choosing one of the co-chairs.
First to hold the roles are Nicola MacDonald from Ngāti Rehua, Patuharakeke, Te Whānau Whero and Te Ākitai, and Auckland Council’s Waitemata and Gulf ward councillor Pippa Coom.
Ms Coom says the leadership model brings the forum closer to operating in partnership under the Treaty of Waitangi to integrate and respect Te Ao Māori as well as other world views.
MacDonald says Te Moananui-ā-Toi, Tīkapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf is under increased pressure.
The forum is seeking greater support for restoration work and to stop marine dumping in or near to the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.”
