New producers to curate Maori stories
A new training course for emerging Māori, Pasifika and Pan-Asian screen producers has had to move online because of COVID-19.
The Māori Asian Pasifika or MAP Screen Development: Producer Training course is funded by the NZ Film Commission and NZ On Air and is led by Sue Maslin and David Court from Australia’s prestigious Compton School.
Hineani Melbourne from Māori screen guild Ngā Aho Whakaari says the course is culturally significant and shows the willingness of funders to unite and support the next wave of visual storytellers.
While programmes exist for writers and directors, producers are the ones who curate which stories get told.
Twelve budding producers were chosen from 51 applicants, including Angela Cudd, Jaimee Poipoi, Nathaniel Howe, and Nicole Horan in the Māori places, Pasikika candidates Abba-Rose Dinah Vaiaoga-Ioasa, Halifonua (Nua) Finau, Vea Mafile'o, and Maria Tanner, and for the Pan-Asian producers, Hweiling Ow, Kim Webby, Michelle Ang and Pachali Brewster.
In a series of workshops running from May until November, the producers will learn everything they need to know about creating a sustainable production business, developing a slate of projects, understanding their personal and professional potential, generating income and increasing their skills and knowledge about all aspects of the screen industry.
