Bequest promotes Maori environmental research
A $1 million bequest will support Māori or Pasifika postgraduate students to study ecology or environmental science at the University of Canterbury.
The putea was left by the late Emeritus Professor Peter Holland, a leading expert in biogeography and environmental change.
The scholarship is named in memory of his parents Stan and Jessie Holland, who kindled his love of the natural world through family camping trips in the South Canterbury hinterland.
Two scholarships will be granted annually.
Dr Darryn Russell, the Assistant Vice-Chancellor Māori, says it’s a thoughtful gift that will make a significant contribution to the university’s resolve in addressing global sustainability challenges.
