Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones is urging iwi to show patience in getting involved in the COVID-19 economic recovery.
There has been criticism from iwi leaders including Ngāti Kahungunu’s Ngahiwi Tomoana and Federation of Māori Authorities chair Traci Houpapa that Māori are not at the table despite having considerable experience and economic resources.
Mr Jones says for those iwi with cash, there will be plenty of opportunities once economic activity starts flowing again.
"I would suggest to iwi leaders, exhaust their nervous energy, their pent-up passion, for deriving ideas that will take themselves forward in recovery. The recovery hasn't even really gathered any momentum because we are still in lockdown. Stop badgering the politicians and start looking after your own people," Mr Jones says.
