National’s Māori development spokesperson says the country should already be back at COVID-19 Alert Level 2 so people can do what they need to restart the economy.
Jo Hayes says Māori businesses have been hit hard by the lockdown, especially those in the tourism sector.
She says the Government failed to balance health and economic questions, leading to the sort of rule-breaking seen at the weekend.
"If you look at social media, people are turning. People are getting frustrated. They don't like getting told off. They just want to get back to work. They don't like having government handouts. They want to get in there and start contributing to rebuilding our economy The longer this Government holds off, the more frustrated people are going to get, the more people are going to start breaking the boundaries that they are put under," Ms Hayes says.
She says people can be forgiven for letting off steam if they don’t know they have a job to go back to.
