Taranaki iwi launch checkpoints

Just because the COVID-19 alert level is dropping a step doesn’t mean Ngā Iwi o Taranaki are dropping their guard.
The iwi this morning started community checkpoints at Urenui and Patea, with support from the police, and a mobile police patrol will operate at the eastern entrance to Taranaki along the Forgotten Highway (SH43).
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Mutunga chair Jamie Tuuta says travellers will be queried about their reasons for entering the region, and if travel is deemed unnecessary or non-essential, they will be asked to return home.
He says while Taranaki has just 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19, there has also been limited testing in Taranaki, especially in the most vulnerable rural communities.
