Homes beat roads in recovery wish list

Greens co-leader James Shaw is keen to see houses rather than roads being the focus of post-COVID-lockdown construction efforts
He’s part of a group of Ministers looking at ways to spark the economy back to life once people can start moving around again.
He says his rule of thumb is the number of jobs that can be created for the amount spent.
"We know we’ve got to build more houses anyway but we also know construction for housing employs more people per dollar spent than the construction of roads, so it makes more sense for us when we want to keep our unemployment numbers down," Mr Shaw says.
There could also be more support for manufacturing, which employs around 200,000 New Zealanders and will become more important as global supply chains are affected by the pandemic.
