Fireworks ban call after Maungarei blaze

Auckland’s Tūpuna Maunga Authority is calling for a total ban on the private sale of fireworks after Tuesday’s fire on Maungarei / Mt Wellington.
Fire and Emergency say the blaze which covered an area of about 60 metres by 40 metres on the southern ridge of the tihi was caused by fireworks.
It follows Guy Fawkes Day fires on Maungarei, Maungawhau-Maoutn Eden and Takarunga-Mt Victoria.
Authority chair Paul Majurey says only a national ban on the sale of fireworks will prevent them being in the hands of people who put the public and ancestral heritage at risk.
