Police Deputy Commissioner Wally Haumaha says gang families need to be included in wider iwi efforts to help whānau deal with the stress of the level four COVID-19 alert.
Mr Haumaha has been talking with Māori, Pacific, ethnic and even gang leaders to find what issues their communities are having with the lockdown.
He’s impressed with the way people are working together.
"I’m talking with our gang leaders and trying to link them up with our iwi entities and really proud of the way our iwi whānau now are looking even at the gang families and putting all judgment aside and saying it is all about the women and children, and these people have whakapapa into our roopu up and down the country, into our hapū, into our iwi," Mr Haumaha says.
