Inform. Prepare. Uplift.
That’s the approach adopted by the South Island Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency as it helps its people deal with the COVID-19 lockdown.
Te Pūtahitanga chief executive Helen Leahy says the IPU strategy was borrowed from Waikato Tainui, and at the moment it’s in the informing stage, not just sending out messages but also surveying whānau to see what they need.
Requests for medical help will go to the top of the list, but it’s also preparing to respond to requests for food, power, internet connections and secure water.
She says a lot of energy is going into the uplift or manaaki stage.
“We want to shift the narrative from talking about COVID-19 to let’s put our focus into #manaaki20. Any time you do a post where you think ‘this is me doing something fabulous at home to keep our whānau uplifted,’ put on it #manaaki20 and it will go on the live wall and right across the country, maybe right across the globe, will see ‘hey, we can do this,’” Ms Leahy says.
