Kenny Rogers, who became a firm favourite of kiwi country music fans after touring here extensively in the early 1970s, is being hailed as one of the giants of the genre.

Rogers died this weekend at the age of 81 at his home in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Singer Dennis Marsh told Radio Waatea host Dale Husband his songs were included in the repertoire of many New Zealand entertainers.

While he has never recorded his songs, he did cover tunes like Islands in the Sun, Coward of the Country and The Gambler on the television series My Country Song.
