Hapu acting to check Covid-19 spread

Hapū and iwi around the country are responding to Covid 19 by closing camping spots, checking whether kaumatua and kuia are being cared for properly and in some cases by trying to close off their rohe.
Hapū in Tokomaru Bay have closed four marae and ordered freedom campers to leave by 8 am Wednesday.
They have also asked Air B’n’B operators and other accommodation providers to shut their doors, and for shops, food outlets and bars to implement strict hygiene requirements including making hand sanitisers available for customers,
They have also called for organisers of Tamararo and Te Matatini to cancel kapa haka events, including wānanga which involve members travelling into the rohe.
Spokesperson Jack Chambers says because of their geographical isolation and the under-resourcing of health services on the East Coast, Ngāti Porou people there are seriously more at risk.
And Ngāti Tūwharetoa hapū with the support of the Department of Conservation has placed a rāhui over Five Mile Bay Recreation Reserve on the edge of Taupo township.
