A member of Maori pandemic response group Te Rōpu Whakakaupapa Uruta says going into lockdown gives the country a chance of getting over the Covid-19 pandemic.
The government yesterday raised the alert level to three until 11.59 pm Wednesday, when it goes to level four.
That means all schools and everything but essential businesses must close,
Dr Rawiri Jensen says the cases of community transmission of the coronavirus raised the stakes,
While it’s a massive step, it’s the right thing to do.
"It’s going to give us the very best chance of reducing the spread and looking after everybody., The modelling I have seen tells me this is likely to work well. Our ICUs are going to get full but manage, they’re going to cope," he says.
Dr Jensen says healthcare workers are doing a really good job of preparing themselves, and much of primary healthcare will be done by telephone.
