Auckland Council is taking air dryers out of its public toilets as it responds to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor Phil Goff says along with cancelling major public events like Pasifika and Polyfest, it’s an example of how Covid 19 will affect everything we touch – or don’t touch.
"We've replaced the use of air cleaners in toilets. That was a great new modern invention but it turns out that they are more likely to spread the virus than good old paper towels. We've got hand sanitiser everywhere. We're giving people advice. We're trying to separate people physically in terms of the layout or where people are sitting," he says.
Mayor Goff says Pasifika and Polyfest would not have been the same without the hugs and hongi, so there was no option but it turns out they are more likely to spread the virus than cancellation.
Auckland Council has also cancelled the Auckland International Cultural Festival and the Music and Movies in Parks series, as well as other community events, to protect people from the potential spread of COVID-19.
